WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2018

This year, Hand in Hand Inclusive Development & Services (HHIDS) has associated with the Airport Authority of India (AAI) and Central Pollution Control Board to celebrate World Environment Day on June 5. World Environment Day 2018 theme “Beat Plastic Pollution” is a call to action for all of us to come together to combat one of the great environmental challenges of our time.

On June 5, HHIDS conducted a 21-day Challenge initiative at the in Chennai Airport’s domestic departure area. The 21-day Challenge initiative was organized to bringa behavioral change in people-make them follow a task leading to the envisioned change by way of practicing it regularly for a period of 21 days. People were asked to pick up a habit, something simple that will enable one to help Beat Plastic Pollution, and to share their story after the 21st day through e-mail.

Dr. Kalpana Sankar, Chairperson, HHIDS gave the welcome address and spoke about the World Environment Day, its significance and connection to the 21 day challenge, and how this challenge can bring about a change in supporting the environment. Mr. Chandra Mouli, Airport Director inaugurated the event by picking a card as part of 21-day challenge.

Celebrities from film industry, media and communications, advocates, Rotarians, business people and many others signed up for the 21-day challenge and promised to make sincere effort for 21 days and to share their stories.

Post event initiation, a mime activity was performed to convey the message of “Beat Plastic Pollution” to the public in the airport.  The silent drama attracted people with their myriad expressions and left the spectators with strong impressions on the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution”.  120 people participated in the 21-day challenge and vowed to practice the task, which will act as the impetus for them to change their behavior toward a greener lifestyle.
